Police and Bribery

I got a ticket from a traffic police yesterday, for I didn't have a driver's license with me. I was like humm.. okay, just hand me the ticket. But the police officer "kindly" offered to have an "on-the-spot court" [read: bribe me, please oh pretty please]. I shrugged and told him I didn't have any cash with me. That was true. Just spent my last one for lunch a few hours before.
His other "kind" solution was for me to visit him at the police office to "settle the matter."

I was in a hurry for a teaching session at IALF, so I let him take the paper of the motorcycle I rented. I guess I do have to go to the police office tomorrow to get it finalised.

It was my fault, I have to admit. But I also couldn't quite appreciate this rather shameless attitude of openly asking to get bribed of these Balinese police officers. No wonder this country's progressing so slowly. Every single state-officer is crooked, no matter what their level is.

For this "kelas teri" traffic police officer, he'll be quite happy if he can get Rp 50,000 (or perhaps less?) from me and the other rule-breakers. But then again, multiply the number of us (which I believe is quite a lot) and sum up their total earning of this traffic papers bust. May be as well serve them more money than their monthly salary.

Consider that as a donation? Hmm...

Aku kalo terima paket ya paling banyak bayar Rp 7500. Padahal itu yg kecepatan siput. Adikmu harus pinter2 ngomong. Diajarin dong!

  3. Ya ampun, mau ngambil paket aja BAYAR???? Dasar Indo..
Mereka kalo denger atau liat yg berbau "luar negeri" pasti minta upeti tambahan, mungkin dipikirnya, ahhh dari luar negeri pasti mahal2, pasti bagus2... jadi minta "ikut kecipratan".
    SEJAK KAPAN EMS BAYAR?????

Hayo??? Hehehehe... looking from the more positive side, be glad that you're only paying the small fish, rather than the big fish!!!

Another more positive side, at least the bureaucrazyyy is not as paranoid as the one here in Europe, ya kan???
If I could pay every single officer at the public departments here to take care of my damn visa and papers, I would!!!! Anything to keep me sleeping soundly at night... Hahahaha....

  4. Hi Ella... kalo airport sih dimana-mana SAMA! Waktu aku ke NL beberapa tahun lalu, aku dititipin orang tua murid HP model paling baru nan mahal. Aku dikasih dos sama receipt-nya juga. Pokoknya in a package.

It'd take time. Kalo ga dia charge aku harga yg sama dengan pengadilan. Practically I'd go for the court. In the long run it's not practical at all, cause that means I have to ask for a day off (or half day off) to attend the court. But I've never been fined or given a ticket before. Usually everything would be fine with a little smile and empty promises that I wouldn't do it again. Sometimes tears also helped. But I'm getting old, so it seems. And I didn't even bother to justify myself to those police officers.
Anyway, this court thing will be quite a new experience. Imagine, Carla in court (walopun cuma pengadilan tilang hahahahahaa)!

I must be a freaking weirdo.. But I'm looking forward to coming to the court. LOL.
