Day 86 of 365 grateful days project.

"I am grateful to have spent the most amazing first year of marriage with the most wonderful man in my life."

I can't say enough how blessed I am and how perfectly content I have been in the past 12 months. After 6 years relationship one must think that nothing changes when you decide to seal it in a marriage. In a way it feels like that, but in a way we also know that it doesn't exactly feel like that. There are many little things that I treasure in the life post-wedding. Little things that make everything matter.

I really enjoy marriage life. And there is no righter guy to spend it with than my hubby bibou.

Day 85 of the 365 grateful days project:

"I'm grateful to have an amazing breezy clean air in Gili Air all alone with hubby."

It just feels different.

When you live in Bali, you don't even dare to think of it as a holiday place. Every morning I anticipate the traffic jam, the people shouting at each other on the street, the road blocks, etc. Of course if I were a tourist, I wouldn't see Bali that way. Compared to many cities in and out of Indonesia, Bali is still a cool destination to go to with a lot of interesting places to discover. However, when you feel that you have discovered everything... it's time to see other islands.

And Gili Air was such a perfect place to cool off. No motor-anything, just dirt roads, bicycles, (almost) virgin beaches, and the smell of the sea mixed with fresh grass mixed with horsepoo (whaaat...). :)
But it's nature. And nature is a lot better than carbondioxided air.

I've been dozing off on a bale of Warung Santay while hubby is busy with his book (HE IS REALLY READING A BOOK! How vacation makes you do abnormal things).

The holiday starts out great. And it will be better tomorrow.

Day 84 of 365 grateful days:

"I am grateful to be going to Gili Air tomorrow for our first wedding anniversary weekend."

We need holiday, period. Both of us worked hard and I spent most of my time working and belly dancing, which lately felt like keeping us apart in a way.

After such an amazing 1920's wedding last year, this cannot happen! We need to bond even stronger than before! So I'm glad we decided to go for this short weekend getaway.

We are so looking forward to Saturday morning!

Day 81 of 365 grateful days project:

"I am grateful that I am now a Madame Chanliau and that the wedding madness is over."

The great thing about getting married is the first 6 months after the engagement/proposal. Everything was bright and positive and we were back madly in love like the first time we met.

However, reality stroke 2 months before the wedding and the stress escalated bit by bit until the last minute of the act of "walking down the aisle." And all this was because I planned and organised my own wedding with 120 invitees.

Now I fully grasp the term Bridezilla and why it was invented at all. It was so easy to choke on someone during these crazy times when nothing seemed to go right on track. I would proudly say I was not one, though. I was impatient at times, yes, but I was so far from being a bridezilla.

BUT, all the little details that seemed so important before became nothing when my husband to be fell sick only 3 days before the wedding. The visits to wedding vendors and venue were changed to clinic, lab and hospital. Fortunately he is a strong man. He could stand still at the end of the aisle while I was walking nervously to him to see if he would faint at all. He looked white and thin and sick and he trembled a little bit; but he managed to declare the wedding vow.

After the ceremony, everyone relaxed, including us, and we started to believe that everything was going well. Very well, even. I have to correct it once again, it was the coolest wedding I've ever attended! And it was ours! VICTORY!!!

To make me stop blahblah-ing, here is a video to the wedding. :)

Day 80 of 365 grateful days project:

"I am grateful that I am getting married in two weeks."

Okay, in my last blog post, I was writing about Marie's wedding in France. I also wrote in the end of the post, that my boyfriend of 5 years proposed me during the reception. I wasn't prepared for that, nor did I hope that it would actually happen; so I flipped and I didn't quite give a satisfying response. When I was back in Bali in October 2012, I got caught up in so much work that I completely forgot the proposal did happen and perhaps needed some follow up.

In one of our rare girls' day out, Pam and Ingrid asked how the France trip was. And then I started telling them what happened at the wedding.

They literally danced on their seat at the Japanese restaurant when they heard about the proposal but soon froze when I said that I didn't say yes, yet. The next conversation could be easily predicted - Pam and Ingrid's attack on how stupid I was. :P

Anyway, inspired by Sex and the City, Ingrid started pushing me to ask him to repeat the question. But how could I do that? It's all different situation then, different mood, different everything. So I thought to wait for another 2 months and see if he'd do something. If he didn't, then I would make the move.

He didn't.

So in January 2013, I started making plans. Basically I wanted to propose him back. I tried at the New Year's Eve dinner, but do you have any idea how hard it was to get the words out of your mouth??? You had so many What If questions in your head and your head was so heavy and your cheeks felt so hot and your mouth dry. Nope, I couldn't do this.

But whenever I am determined to do something, I will find one way or another to make it happen. So I came up with a creative marriage proposal: making a video of family and friends proposing him for ME. I sent them emails and Facebook messages that I needed them to make a photo having one specific word that I assigned them to do. And since everyone was so excited about the prospect of us getting married, it took reasonably fast to collect all the photos! I was so smart!!! :D

Ingrid holding the word "Marry"
I am not a videographer or video editor, or anybody related to video production. But I wanted to do everything myself since the hardest part is done by people around the world. So for 2 weeks I woke up earlier than normal to put the photos together into a presentable video. To be honest, choosing the songs are the harder part. :P

The video was ready just after Valentine's day. But we were throwing a house warming party on the 23rd of February so I waited to play the video in this occasion. Despite the hard rain and the fact that half of the guests had gone home (better I guess so it wasn't too embarrassing), my trembling finger pressed Play on the TV remote control. Then this video was playing...

Vincent's reaction was..... overwhelming. I'm not even sure if that was even the right word. But hey, from the title of this blog you should have already known that he said yes. :)

I'm such a lucky girl. And he is one damn lucky guy.
Day 78 of 365 grateful days project:

"I'm grateful to be in the first French wedding I've ever Attended."

Along with Marie's sister, I'm the photographer of the wedding. It started with the legal ceremony at the City Hall which is just 5 minute walk away from Marie's grandparents' house. I felt the priviledge of coming into the City Hall for the first time and could have the access in front to shoot the beautiful wedding. :)

Then we moved to Marie's grandparents' beautiful house for l'apero at their amazing garden.

I was especially fascinated by the idea of simply dipping the wine bottles in the garden stream to keep them cool.
And then we went to the Parc de Villeroy for some photoshoots. Obviously I'm not in most of the photos, but I'll post those which I was. :)

In the evening we had dinner at a cool restaurant where Vincent -- out of the blue -- said to me: "Will you marry me?"

Whhaaaaaaa....???
Day 57 of 365 grateful days project:

"I'm grateful that Vincent is back."

These past two weeks felt like two months. Time went by sooooo slowly. But nothing matters anymore. He's here.

Day 56 of 365 grateful days project:

"I'm grateful to have such a nice new haircut today."

Do you remember when I had my hair dyed RED 2 months ago? I looked like this.

I knew I should have had a new haircut to go with the fashion red colour, but I was already too excited to even make that attempt. The hairdresser told me that it would stay red for 2 months, then it would turn copper. He was correct. Starting from early this month it changed to copper, and still looked good on me. I was planning to have a haircut to match it.

Today, I thought it was the right time to do it. Vincent is coming back from France tomorrow and I want to look different. So I went to my favourite hair salon and had my hair changed to this.

Nice, eh? You can't really see my highlight there because I was using one of instagram's filters but you have an idea of the new hairstyle.

Now I'm definitely ready to welcome Mr Boyfriend back! Yay!
Day 47 of 365 grateful days project:

"I'm grateful to finally find out whether or not I will be with Vincent this Christmas."

Trust me, it was not that easy to come up with the grateful line above. What I'm feeling now is more like sad than grateful.

Our last guests were leaving and Vincent asked them if they would be in Nancy, France for Christmas; if they would, then he'd see them there. They said yes and naturally asked whether I would be there too. Vince said no.

I guess I already knew that I wouldn't be going based on our present financial record. But we never discussed that it was decided as such, while in the beginning of the year it seemed like I'd be going. But then again, there are always many plans and very little effort to make them come true. So why surprised, right?

I think the shock came because I had to hear it in front of other people. And for a weird reason, I thought I was being stepped up. And that made me feel that there was some distance between us, shown by our lack of communication in this case. I actually always believed that we had good communication. But somehow, for more important issues, we both seem to try to avoid talking about them.

Which led me to question things again.

Anyway, just so that there is no misunderstanding, I'm not dying to go to France. Yes, it'd be nice to revisit it, but that's really the last thing that should be in my priority. Christmas, on the other hand, is one of the very few important events for me. This is the time when we should be spending with our beloved family, which actually makes it a reason enough for Vincent to spend it with his mother. After all, that's the only time they can be together in a year while I have him the whole year long. But then who am I then?

I am a girlfriend.

Why can't I bring myself to remember that at times? I've been too busy playing house that even I deceive myself that I'm someone more.

I hope nobody thinks that I'm blaming anyone, because I'm not. And I was actually touched that Vincent later on said that we could work on it if I did want to go. But what's the point of going to Europe for 2 weeks, probably stranded at his mother's house most of the time because the snow is too thick outside, and then coming home totally broke?

The bigger issue here does not lie in the travel. The bigger issue is - to me at least - what we are and where we are in this relationship. Vincent likes to go with the flow, and if I were 22 instead of 32 I would prefer going with the flow, too. But I'm done with going with the flow. I need directions!

Ideally I'd like to spend my life forever with him. But if forever is not possible, I'll just settle to "as long as we can take." But who knows... maybe long is not that long...

I must be fucking PMS-ing! This is why I don't like to think. Everything looks fine for a long time now and there must be always something to make it not fine. Bugger!
Day 43 of 365 grateful days project:

"I'm grateful for Vincent's sweet email this morning."

Day 40 of 365 Grateful Days Project:

"I'm grateful that Vincent is wearing my ring now."

It's not gold, leave alone platinum. It has no diamond like the ring he gave me. But I gave it with all my heart. 3 years ago he gave me this nice ring - or two rings I must say, because they're supposed to be worn together - as, I don't know, a way to express his commitment in this relationship? Only this year when we celebrated our third year anniversary in Menjangan island, I thought of giving this silver ring as the anniv gift.

It does have a deeper meaning for me, though. I'd never in my life given any guy a ring, or any type of jewelry in that matter. And let me tell you a secret, I did almost propose him. :-O But it didn't happen because when he wanted to put on the ring, it immediately fell off his finger because it was like 3 sizes too big! So, I went through the horrible anxious moment of wanting to propose, but all fell through in one second the ring jumped out of his finger. Moment's lost and I doubt it will ever happen again.

I still love the fact that he's wearing it every day, though. That strangely fulfills me in a way.
Day 5 of 365 grateful days project..

"I'm grateful that we are leaving today for Menjangan Island for a short 3-day trip to celebrate our 3rd year anniversary."

It has been ages since I had a vacation the last time and it has also been more than a year that Vincent and I took a vacation together. I'm close to being burnt out by the piles of projects I'm doing now and I can really use this vacation to rejuvenate my body and mind.

YAYYYY!!!
I have been trying hard to finish all projects today so that I won't have to work during the Christmas week. But of course something had to come up.

It started with my mother's fight with Ita this morning. Basically it was a plain misunderstanding (stupid things come out from SMS communication, I really don't understand why people prefer SMSes than talking directly). Then my mother called me to rant about it. As usual, it didn't stop there. If there was no drama in my family, it wouldn't be my family. This is what she had to say:

"I've had enough of this life. All my children failed me. Including you. None of them would listen to what I say, leave alone doing it. I'm a failed mother and I am ashamed of it. I'm tired of this life and if God want to take me, He can do it any time now."

I told her she was exaggerating things. It was just a misunderstanding and she didn't need to go that far saying those things. Besides, it's Christmas...

"Christmas is dead to me. Christmas is in your heart and I don't feel any peace, not from any of you behaving like what you want, hurting me all the time this year."

I asked her how I hurt her. And why didn't I know that I hurt my own mother? What did I say?

"Remember when I asked you about your status with Vincent? It was your second anniversary and yes, I was happy for you. But when I asked you if it was going anywhere, you were mad at me and you accused me that I was rushing you into marriage, that it was your life and you had all rights to decide it like you wanted. You said whether you wanted to marry him or just forever be his girlfriend, that was your own problem. I had no voice or whatsoever to decide your life. I'd remember that and I never asked you anymore about that. But it hurt my feelings."

Yeah, I think I did say those things. Not in the way she explained to me, but it was more or less the idea that I said. I asked her if she was interested in knowing what I felt back then when she asked me that. She said no. But truthfully, even I got sick of those questions. Me, the very me who goes for the real things in life, who thinks that a signed black-and-white paper is just a seal of a commitment of two lovers in love, who doesn't want to rush things, who expects that if a marriage happens, it has to happen because we both want it and not that we are socially forced by others. But it's just too much. I'd hear that a hundred times every time I went back to Surabaya. I'd hear that from my happily married former boss. I'd hear that from my pembantu and the surrounding Balinese people who were questioning my relationship status. I already put a blindfold and earplugs so that I wouldn't have to see their smirk and listen to their thoughts. I'd do anything to stay in this relationship I cherished so much that it stayed alive as long as we could keep it alive. Besides, I honestly don't care what people think. None of them.

But I do care about what my mother thinks. It is still my life and I am the one to decide it where it should go. But never did I want to hurt her. And it seemed plain impossible to make her understand that marriage was not a necessity. Not the end of the deal. Not when you still see so many people cheating on their spouses under the so-called marriage. Not when there are children involved. Yes, it would be nice to be married one day, but if I ever want to do that, I want it to happen for the right reasons! Ideally not because I am carrying a man's child and that's why I have to get married. She was married twice and she was not happy in either of them. Why couldn't she understand that? At the very least, when you are not married, it is less complicated to break up if you think that man is not for you. Right?

But she is right for one thing. Christmas is in your heart. And I don't feel it. As much as I have wanted to get the Christmas spirit this year, it was already dying when Vincent flew to France. He is my family now. One of the few most important people in my life. But even with that notion, I spent some time doubting it this year. And now my mother is sad, my sister is pissed, my brother is out of luck, my cousin feels neglected and I am terribly sad and lonely.

It is officially the worst Christmas ever.
I have had too many ups and downs this year. More than once I thought that I couldn't work things out, that things were getting out of hands, and that I was unhappy.

And I was never unhappy since I recovered from my hardest period after my dad died in 1997.

I am looking around me now... at the best ammenities that surround me, at the spacious house with the lovely gadgets that fill it in, at the bamboo tree next to the huge window in my living room where the birds chirp happily, at the man who I trust to love me. They are all that I ever wanted. But ironically I feel lonely anyway.

I do have friends. But this year has treated us so badly that none of us could be more positive than the others to at least influence our mood to a better one (except Carol, but she was just passing by, the Morrocan deserted life has her). I saw them brokenhearted. I saw myself brokenhearted. Their lives were sort of falling apart, while mine was hanging on a tight rope.

When things were getting slightly better, there was always something that stood in the way to ruin it. It has been an endless, annoying, tiring emotional journey.

And I am still here... because in a rather strange way, I believe if I can survive this year, next year there will be a great reward waiting for me and the people around me.

So yes, unlike the other Decembers I have ever had so far (not even the December of the year when my father died), I am not looking forward to the festivities and the funs. Because somehow I know it won't be fun.

I just can't wait to get over the month and get to 2011.
Love is such a weird thing. When you are too tightly wrapped with it, you feel like getting off. When it's really off, you feel miserable.

Vincent went to Thailand for work 11 days ago. At first I felt sort of relieved (nothing bad against him, it's just that the personal space sometimes feels good, too). But after a few days, I just felt so lonely and the space was suddenly not fun anymore. I even missed the sound that he always makes - his fart (doh!).

But he's back now, ending the silly misery and the guessing what-he's-doing-now game. He is a little sick from being exposed too much to the aircon and too much work so I guess I am going to have to do a good job in returning his energy the next few days.

For the second time in the last 2 weeks, I feel relieved again.
One thing I learnt during my blogging absence was that nothing was 100% definite in this world.

At some point I felt that I might have turned into too trusting individual and I rested and believed my future would be all bright and positive now that I had someone to share it with. But people do get weary and they do change. And love shares the same amount of extremity with hatred. Everything is too positive in love just like everything is too negative in hatred. For a while, I'd forgotten about that. I also forgot one of my own life values: keep a room inside your heart in case something breaks. That should help keep you away from desperation and massive breakdown. I did not. As I said, I was becoming too positive in looking at things.

Well, let's say I was reminded of all that. And though it is somewhat bitter to base your relationship on, it is the truth. So I have been struggling to get my old self back and maybe I will do things that I enjoyed doing again. I am thinking about traveling to the eastern part of Indonesia as soon as my financial situation gets better - Carla's way.
After over 2 years together, Vincent finally gave me a bouquet of roses in different colours.

It was on my birthday, I was out to Fabio's and Inga's, and when I was back, this sweet bouquet was stuck between the handle of the door to the guest room where I usually work and two birthday gifts were put on the floor under the flowers.

I was upset at him earlier that month, but with this he is forgiven for the next 3 years. :)

No, I'm not on period and not gonna be soon.
A few updates that have been happening in my life this past fresh one week:
  • My sister, Ita, has moved to Bali at the same time my boss was recruiting for a new staff to replace Carol (after 5 months I struggled doing two-person job!). She appeared to be the best candidate among the other 5 [I don't know how, my critical self thinks that her English is far from sufficient]. But anyway, congratulations to her. She started working on Monday (3 days ago) and so far she has shown a real motivation in learning what she should be doing at the office. It is not easy in the beginning, but I do appreciate her willingness.
  • Fabio and Inga are moving to a big house in Sanur next weekend. It will be the same day Vincent arrives (YAY!!!!). So that means both my sister and I will have to get a (separate) place near the new office.
I think I could settle the first month living in this hotel/kost in Sidakarya, less than 5 minutes drive from Fabio's place. I actually liked a little house overlooking a rice field like 20 minutes from the new office. But it's really too far for Vincent to get to the expat area. While I think it is important for him to build his network in his first months here so that he can secure a job not long after he moves. So we agreed to take this full-service hotel for a month. Good deal for a short period, but not really in the long run. But I guess it is a better option. Then we can buy one-month time to look around for a house for us together.
  • This evening after work I drove Ita to Sanur area near the new office to look around for a boarding house for her. Amazingly enough, among the so many mushrooming boarding houses (Bahasa = kos-kosan), everything was full. And we were actually looking at the "city" side of Sanur instead of the seaside. My sister kept wondering why. I did not understand it, either.

We finally tried our luck in the seaside area. Ita found something that looked like a boarding house so she went in to see if there were a room available. I think I shouldn't waste time accompanying her there, but instead I checked out the other places nearby that looked like a boarding house. So I went inside this place next door that looked like a small losmen.

There was a guy with a well-built-body and latino-look curly hair approaching me and asked me what I wanted. I asked him if it was a penginapan (inn) and he said yes. Then I asked him how much it would cost if I was to rent it for a month. He said he was not renting rooms monthly.

"Oh, alright. It's like a hotel then. How much is it per day/night?" I asked again.

I swear he looked like he almost burst into laughing when he said, "We don't rent it on daily basis either."

    I was stunned and confused.

"We rent rooms on hour-basis," he continued.

I stopped being dumb and the images of the places with the Sutra condom zone signs made me realise that I just stepped into one of the brothels in Sanur. I got so awkward and I prepared myself to run out of that place as soon as I could before he thought I could be recruited as one of their sex workers.

My sister was laughing her arse off when she heard the story, and so was Pam.

"I never saw any hotel rooms in Kuta that are rented on hourly basis," Pam said, "So Sanur must be the Bali-side of prostitution area."

I may need to research that. She might be right. I mean I'm not in the slightest doubt that Kuta is full of ayam's[1]. We saw a lot of them everywhere. But brothels, hmm... I don't think I've seen one yet here. Not as obvious as a sex-trade marketplace like in Sanur, at least.

Now that explains why the boarding houses are full! Those girls must have occupied them.

[1] Ayam carries the connotation meaning of a young female prostitute. However, its literal meaning is chicken.
